Prior to 2004 the incidence of ID Theft was almost unheard of, but starting that year the problem started to become commonplace. With the increase in the incidence of ID Theft on the rise, especially in the workplace, State and Federal agencies began to take notice and enact guidelines and increasingly stringent regulations to try and combat the problem. Some of these regulations include HIPPA, The Gramm, Leach, Bliley Safeguard Rule, the Texas Whistleblower Statute, FACTA and The FACTA Red Flag Rules, and many more. All of these regulations provide very punative penalties for not protecting the personal information of a business's employees and customers. These penalties can include large fines, criminal penaties, and exposure to crippling civil litigation.
